Expressive Figure Workshops

Everyone has a personal and unique way of making art. My workshops focus on accessing everyone's natural creative ability, finding out how easy it is to do expressive figure work and how much fun it can be!

A main goal is taking the fear out of figure drawing.

Each day we start with quick drawings to loosen up and get our creative juices flowing.

There will be short discussions of my philosophy and working methods throughout the workshop.

Some of my work is done on Arches w/c paper using mostly transparent watercolor.

Some is done on Strathmore 500 Bristol board (plate surface)

using watercolor, gouache and sometimes charcoal.

I choose the method that best helps expresses the subject.

I will do brief demos of each method as needed.

Working on the Bristol board is a time consuming process.

(If you want to try it get only 1 sheet and cut it into 4 pieces.)

The majority of each day will be left for drawing, painting and individual instruction.

Clothed models will be posing each day.

Workshops are limited to16

All levels are welcome

(Demos will be in watercolor, but participants may work in any medium they prefer)

Student Testimonials

JoAnne, I LOVED our workshop in France. I think it was so good that you let us all work at our own pace. Some like to paint on site and as for me, I liked to take photos and come back and paint at night. Thank you for those great memories.

ANN HUNTER

JoAnne’s watercolor workshop guided me through some of the best work I’ve done! And the best part is that what I learned - and practiced - has stayed with me! Fabulous!

SARAH CAMPBELL

I have studied with JoAnne many times and learn something new in every class. Her workshops provide an excellent balance of instruction and work time - all in a relaxing, fun atmosphere. She is a master of watercolor and the human figure. I highly recommend!
